Necessities
Before I knew you, I didn't know
the names of flowers or how to garden,
didn't know it was de rigeur to change
your purse with the seasons.
You told me your mother polished
ficus leaves with milk before a party
so I did that. You spent hours decorating
your mantle for every holiday,
so I did that too. I was embarrassed
to tell you I did not own dessert plates.
but I do now, green and blue glass,
with a frosty finish, like the smile
you give me every time we have to meet.
