The word poem ideas always work well for me, and I am happy to submit lthe following lists of 4-5 words/word combos for prompting purposes. Here are a few
groups to add into the mix.
transom withdrawal sunbeam refrigerator paint brush and father figure frogman disco cigarette correspondence and lady-like lost enchantment corduroy youthful and soak head scarf vomit windshield death ray and heat stroke nada wine bucket clothesline cast iron and happenstance trapeze transition gardenias dusk and divorce nursery rhymes ashtray switchboard swimming I find that coupling word lists like these with other theme or deadline oriented prompts is a great way to produce unexpected work or at least get you going. Word prompts can always be altered if they get in the way of an otherwise healthy poem. Also, with what duotrope is doing now with themed deadlines, maybe you can lighten your load and just link to that? A thought, to free your time for writing, which is what we're here for, n'est-ce pas? |

Thanks, Greta! I will definitely use these word sets. I rely on Duotrope and a couple of other sites for finding theme issue deadlines. And maybe, since
there's not much action at the Waters right now, I should make it easier on myself. I might have to do that in the next couple of weeks, since I'll be
traveling. I kind of like the process of searching for prompts and only wish I were writing more at the moment. There have been so many good ones that I let
pass by. However, we can always return to them. I might repost some of them, too.

Toni, here is the gist of Dorianne Laux's prompt that elicited my 'good as gold god' poem of the other day. I pasted it to my word doc. and then
just wrote the poem in one go. (but the prompt got the pen flowing!) I can't find the original post on Facebook where I saw it.. so I'm missing the
example she showed, but it can probably be googled. looks like fun, eh?
feel free to edit or move this post, as seems fitting. I'm going to call it a twenty words 'triggering town' exercise. Represent your past in the first eight words, your present in the next eight words and your future self in the remaining four words. Make sure you maintain distillation. Not a tree, but an elm or a maple. Not shoes, but platforms, leather work boots or scuffed flats. Include both sides of the self: light and dark. Stone's poems are filled with life and movement. Choose a word of movement. Then find an abstraction, a word you might use to define what most motivates or controls your life. For Ruth Stone, it might be stubbornness. What is it for you? Joy, guilt, fear, love, shame, pride, anger, regret? And last, choose a few words drawn from these categories: seasons, times of day or night, astrological signs, totems, heroes and heroines, nicknames, places in the universe, invented words or sounds, snippets of dialog. Use this list to write a 23-line autobiographical poem, or a poem about one of your heroes, using the words you've chosen. Make the title of the poem your abstract word. |

Alison, Thanks for this. I'll come back and read through more carefully -- and, who knows, maybe give it a try. It really looks like fun!
PS: I found the prompt at ReadWritePoem. (To quote George Bush, "I can use the Google") Thanks again!

Well, that's weird. Now the link doesn't work. I was there a few minutes ago, but can't get back. I'll try tomorrow. I contacted the Webmaster.

Siva,
I'm delighted to see you! I don't know that we have new prompts, but I'd be happy to make a huge list tonight to post to see if anything works for you. It would be great to see you on the Beach for the 7-in-7 Judy |

Hello, Sivakami! We were wondering where you've been. I haven't been posting regular prompts -- partly because I was very busy since early September
with music and trips, and partly because people weren't using them. But, I'd like to get back to writing from prompts, too. I'll do some research
and post a set tomorrow.
We look forward to hearing from you. |

Oh, thanks Judy! What a great set of words. I can easily imagine building a poem around one of these words or choosing a few to work with. I also find it works
well, when I'm stuck, to get a poem restarted: that is, pick a word and force myself to use it in the next line.
I added this list as a separate WRITING PROMPTS post in The Shipyards.
